What the manufacturer says
Thiol Libre liberates tropical thiol aromas from your hops and malt; thanks to the thiol compound 3-MHA and others, beers fermented with Thiol Libre have enhanced guava and passionfruit aromas.
What the evidence says
- Escarpment Labs classifies Thiol Libre as very high for thiol biotransformation and describes it as bred, not genetically modified; a 2023 update removed the phenolic character of the early release. Escarpment Labs
Rating context: manufacturers usually quote free-thiol concentration relative to the sensory threshold, not conversion yield. Peer-reviewed work finds that only a small fraction of bound precursors is converted in beer fermentation, so the ordering between strains is more reliable than any absolute number Chenot et al. 2021 Michel et al. 2019.
In practice
The usual homebrew-friendly route to strong thiol release without an engineered strain. Confirm you have the current, non-phenolic version.
Non-GMO (bred).
Hops that reward this strain
Citra, Cryo Citra, Cryo Mosaic, Cryo Simcoe, Ekuanot, Galaxy, Hallertau Blanc, Kohatu, Mosaic, Nelson Sauvin, Riwaka, Sabro, Simcoe, Strata, Superdelic, Talus, Vista, Waimea. Each carries a high rating for bound 3MH-family or 4MMP precursors. Mash and whirlpool additions supply precursors during fermentation; a cold dry hop mostly adds the free fraction.
In Hoparoma
Select Escarpment Labs Thiol Libre in the recipe builder and Hoparoma models its release step against your hop precursors, malt precursors, and Phantasm dose. It is an estimate of where the beer is likely to land, with the engine's limits disclosed.
